Boise State football: ‘Rodney Dangerfield’ of college sports

Remember the comedian Rodney Dangerfield and the comedy routine he pioneered that centered on “I don’t get no respect”?

I’ve discovered that a school I went to has become sort of the Rodney Dangerfield of college football — I’m talking about the Boise State University Broncos.

The Broncos have gone undefeated 3 of the last 5 seasons, including this season. They are ranked Number 9 right now in the BCS Championship standings.

And I just heard a lengthy discussion by some TV sports gurus explaining why the 10-2 Ohio State Buckeyes are more deserving of the final possible “at-large” BCS Bowl Game instead of Boise State.

For the record: I am a proud graduate of Boise High School (class of ’65) and did my first two years of college at what was then called Boise College and became Boise State University. (My wife was in the first 4-year degree graduating class of Boise College.)

Although neither I nor my wife have lived in Boise or even visited there since 1984, we are loyal to the core to the Broncos Orange and Blue! Go Broncos!

Ah, well. To paraphrase the great Rodney — “They don’t get no respect.”

Avoid some ‘Black Friday’ madness — shop online

A few days ago, I invited you to tell me about your online shopping plans for the holidays, and/or your online shopping habits in general. I turn to the subject again today, “Black Friday,” that day after Thanksgiving madness here in the U.S. now in full bloom. Are you of a mind to avoid some of that shopping madness by doing more or less online shopping this year?

Because whether you’re looking for quality Festina watches, or some bicycles for the family, you absolutely can find ANYTHING you want for holiday giving SOMEWHERE online. And, you can often save shipping costs, sometimes still even save paying a state sales tax, making your online shopping buys very comparable to or even better than what you can find in the “brick-and-mortar” stores at your local malls.

Worth thinking about as you sit down after a long, weary day of shopping, isn’t it?

Be careful this weekend — shopping madhouse out there

Are you one of those people who get caught up in the excitement (?) or adventure (??) of the post-Thanksgiving shopping madhouse in the U.S. today and this weekend?

I’ve never been in a position to want to buy something so badly that I’d go through such a madhouse personally. But good luck and best wishes to those who do!

I know the small city in which I live has been warning people about expected increases in traffic. They’re actually changing stoplight cycle sequences in ways intended to help ease traffic congestion around our shopping malls.

So just a “heads-up” if you’ve not yet gotten involved in the mayhem: Be careful this weekend; it’s a shopping madhouse out there from what I’ve heard!
