Another parable: Make use of tools you have at hand
By Gary | June 8, 2008
I just started a new, full-time "day job," mostly because my Internet efforts aren't working well enough to pay the bills in timely fashion. Creditors don't like that.
My first day was an orientation session, which included handing out a folder with some instruction sheets, company policy proclamations, and even some advertising pens emblazoned with the company's logo.
As it happens, I'm something of a collector (perhaps "pack rat" would be more accurate) and one of the things I sort of collect are ballpoint pens. In this case, I took the pen with the company logo out and tucked it into my shirt pocket. I later put it in the "man's purse" -- I mean soft-sided book bag! -- I carry with me when I go to work. One of the responsibilities of this job includes regular hand-written reports or "journaling" during each shift. Those reports require black ink -- and since I never know when or where I'll need to make notes in my trusty pocket log, it's good to have a pen.
Now I have some really nice pens that I use regularly. I generally prefer the ones with a sharp, dark black "liquid gel" ink to the simple, cheapie ballpoint far like the cheap pen.
But it's good to know I have a pen available should my usual pen run dry -- which it actually did once in the middle of a semester midterm exam.
Moral of this story (if there actually IS one) would be: Keep spare tools handy to get your job done, even if they aren't your favorite pens (pencils, wrenches, etc.) so you really CAN get the job done.
