Beirut may be exploding into sectarian warfare again
By Gary | May 8, 2008
Sad news this morning out of Beirut, Lebanon -- gunfire and explosions all over the cable TV channels with coverage from that once wonderful city, as warring Muslim factions attack each other.
I haven't seen enough to know what's happening yet, but it brings back haunting memories of the violence and destruction during the horrible civil war that wracked the city and the region back in the 1980s. May God forbid those poor people having to go through that again.
I'm not interested in judging religions or passing any kind of blanket "judgments," really on the behavior of other people and other nations. But it continues to puzzle me why Islamic extremists seem to be among the most violent, hate-filled religious fanatics in the modern world. Surely they ought to be able to get together and settle their differences short of violence that destroys lives and nations?? Or perhaps agree to disagree without feeling an obligation to obliterate each other?
May we all send kind wishes and prayers to the people of Lebanon, especially the people of Beirut, as they try to stop the violence before it escalates into something like the horrors of the 1980s in Beirut.
