Compelling drama is compelling, no matter how old

By Gary | June 3, 2008

All right, maybe you think of the old TV Western series "Gunsmoke" as compelling drama. But some of us do. I do, for example.

The show ran almost forever on CBS, with a cast of characters who could do gripping drama or light-hearted comedy. It featured guest stars most weeks who were either very successful actors or became that in following years. I happen to be watching an episode right now featuring Pat Hingle and Jan-Michael Vincent. Neither made it to "Oscar" quality careers, but both were later (this episode is from 1971) quite successful in film and TV.

Of course, there would never have been a television version of "Gunsmoke" without the inimitable James Arness, "Matt Dillon" to generations of Americans. Still alive and well in his 80s, Arness had an acting career prior to the "Gunsmoke" role, but may have become more type cast than any living human being once he became known as the steely lawman to generations of television fans.

Good drama. Good fun. Check your cable or satellite TV provider and catch an episode if you can.
