Democrats don’t understand — McCain is his own best ’secret weapon’
By Gary | April 3, 2008
With the presidential race dominating the media from now through November, it's hard to avoid making an occasional comment.
Those of you who read my other blogs probably already know that I consider myself somewhere leaning toward the "liberal" range of the Democratic Party. So I write this with combined feelings of puzzlement and sympathy for my "own party."
The Democrats are so busy fighting and feuding over whether Obama or Clinton will carry the standard into the general election battle that they're missing the best weapon John McCain has to use against them in that battle: himself.
If they don't stop squabbling and get something nailed down soon, McCain will build an awesome lead on them. Because whether Republicans are bickering over McCain's "conservatism v. non-conservatism," they are fully aware of his one giant advantage with voters: McCain is a bona fide Vietnam War hero.
According to a quick "Google," there are approximately 1.5 million Americans in all branches of the military. I personally have two brothers who are retired career military. I feel confident that more than 80 percent (totally my guess, really) of the active military and retired veterans consider themselves politically conservative and/or Republicans.
I'm becoming increasingly confident that all Sen. John McCain will need to do is run repeats of that television commercial depicting him as a P.O.W. and returning P.O.W. -- and voters will rally around him sufficiently to whip up on the Democratic candidate.
Parting sorry words on the matter: I initially thought, given the shambles we have under President Bush, that the Democrats could win this election running a trained monkey as a candidate. I'm beginning to believe that, in their passion to elect either the first African-American president or the first woman president, they've waffled the election away.
Man, I so did NOT want another 4-8 years of a Republican Administration.
