Everybody ‘having a freakin’ cow’ over economy — where is optimism?
By Gary | December 2, 2008
I heard a viewer video on CNN this morning where some young lady was bemoaning the thought that "Everybody's having a freakin' cow over the economy." In the context of her remarks, she was puzzling over why everyone's continuing to panic, when in her experience and her community, she said, things really weren't that bad. She said she personally knows no one who has lost a job or lost a home to foreclosure. She concluded with a question: "Am I the only optimist left??"
Maybe if we all just got on with our lives, helping those in need and living our lives in a good way, the economy will start to level out. Maybe if we get out there during the remainder of the holiday season and spend what we need to get those presents and personal items we really want -- MAYBE the economy will start to turn around. Whether you're buying discount furniture, weekly groceries, or that electronic gadget you've always wanted, we ought always to spend "prudently," i.e., don't slam yourself into a deep credit hole just to buy various toys of any kind. But don't let fear of disaster add to any economic disasters we're facing.
Not to sound too corny, but I'm reminded of those words from FDR's first inaugural address: "The only thing we have to fear is fear itself." (So, what can I say -- I was a history grad student not long ago?)
My son, who does some investing, and those friends I have who are in the stock market all say the major problem right now is not the economy or economic downturn driving the stock market down. What's driving the market down, they say, is PANIC on the part of people who are fearful about the economy.
Don't panic. Don't be afraid. Be an optimist and get on with your life today!
