For many of us, a good cup of coffee makes life more ALIVE!

By Gary | September 1, 2008

Whether your favorite is a high-end custom blended coffee bean, somewhat high-end beans like Starbucks coffee -- or just plain old store-bought brews like Maxwell House and Folgers, if you're a coffee lover you understand and appreciate the title of this post.

Hey, I can quit coffee any time I want. I just REALLY don't want to right now!

Personally, I started drinking coffee regularly when I was about 14 and had to do an early morning paper route in Denver, Colorado. Two things you should know about that paper route: It was a very big route, and I delivered it by hand by myself, using a bicycle. It also happened to be in one of the toughest neighborhood in what was then called "North Denver." Taking all things into consideration, I really needed all the boost caffeine gave me to handle that route.

In my later teen years, I remember enjoying some honest-to-goodness campfire coffee in the mountains of central and northern Idaho. Campfire coffee in this case meant bringing water to a rapid boil in a big galvanized metal coffee pot setting on a metal grill over an open campfire. You then toss in two or three large handfuls of coffee -- probably more like four or five, to make it strong enough -- then you sit back and wait for it to brew up to exactly the right fresh, STRONG smell. Add a bit of real cream and some sugar and you're there.

As an adult, I discovered that I married a true miracle worker. My wife, Shirley, has never had more than two or three swallows of coffee in her life. But she absolutely brews the finest pot of coffee I've ever tasted. She has the knack for getting the artistry of measuring exactly the right amount of water and the right amount of coffee exactly as it should be. She's a terrific person -- and a fantastic coffee maker. I bow to her expertise.

Not a coffee drinker yourself? It's never too late for you. If you are a coffee drinker, I salute you with my favorite mug and say, "Enjoy"!
