Gasoline prices outpacing older pump technology

By Gary | May 13, 2008

I saw a bizarre story in our local paper this morning concerning the high price of gasoline: Older, non-digital gasoline pumps are reaching their pricing limits.

Yes, soon station owners may have to give you free gasoline -- uh, well, no, probably you won't get free gas out of the deal.

The problem seems to be, the story said, that older pumps which don't use digital readouts to display prices, gallons pumped, price per gallon, etc., can only go up to $3.99.9 per gallon. They cannot, I guess, display $4.00.9 or anything higher than the $3.99.9.

I suspect not too many older gas pumps are around these days, but certainly there must be some in smaller towns and rural areas? What are those station owners to do?

I'll bet I can figure this one out: Gas companies will supply newer pumps, and that cost will be passed along to you and me when we buy gasoline. One more reason to give up the gas guzzlers and walk or ride a bike, perhaps?
