Hey, upper-echelon oil company execs are just regular people too

By Gary | May 22, 2008

I heard just the smallest sound bite from Congressional hearings with oil company executives on a TV newscast yesterday. I'm not even sure about who the guy was -- my son was paying closer attention and I think he said the man was the head of Shell Oil, but that may be wrong -- but he made some sort of remark about he and his family were just "regular people, just like you."

I'm trying very hard not to sound personally bitter about the atrocious, rapacious profits the oil industry pulls in every month. Really I am trying. But, when we're struggling to pay the month's bills and make the mortgage payment, when we had a overdraft last week because of a $10 or less mess-up in our record keeping -- you know, it just becomes hard to think of a $2-$20 million a year executive and his family as just "regular folks" like me. (I have similar problems regarding the self-righteous congressional and senatorial dupes doing the questioning and their failure to take some sort of action long before oil topped $130 a barrel -- but that's a different story for a different time.)

Life is grand, really. Despite the "downturned" economy, lousy-to-non-existent health care most of us have, and the outrageously high cost of any and all transportation in this country -- life really is grand. I highly recommend life, and hope you'll join me in looking past all the problems and enjoying the grand ride through your day!
