If only the candidates COULD make a joint trip to Iraq …

By Gary | June 4, 2008

We can always dream, can't we? We can even dream about good things happening in the world of politics, such as Sens. McCain, Obama, and even Clinton all getting together for a joint trip to Iraq. They should make the trip as soon as possible and get a real, unbiased view of what life is like there, of the Iraqi people, the American presence, the whole works. Then, no matter which candidate wins the presidency in November, we could know that he or she was truly informed about what's really going on in that war torn, sad part of the world.

But this is real life, not dreams, and the worst part is that politics rule candidates -- not the other way around. At least that is true in America.

In real life, the candidates are using Iraq to jockey for votes, not to truly resolve world issues and/or meet the needs of Iraqis, Americans, or any other people. In real life, McCain makes the offer because it's a good way to posture (pander) for votes. In real life, Obama and/or Clinton would never take the offer because they would be too concerned about giving McCain a big PR boost as a "peace maker" by taking the trip.

Ah, well, we can dream, can't we? We can even dream that some day the world will find the resolve to set aside at least some of our differences and selfishness to reach a level of "less turmoil," if we can't truly find peace.
