Let go of the ‘doom and gloom’ for awhile — watch a sitcom

By Gary | November 12, 2008

Tired of the weary worries of economic and political disaster? Turn off the news channels, shut down your computer browser, and travel back in time with me to a simpler, happier place -- an inn in rural Vermont run by Dick and Joanna Loudon. Yes, I'm talking about "Newhart," undoubtedly one of the funniest and most fun sitcoms ever to grace a television set.

I currently watch reruns of the show. They're on WGN on Sunday evenings when I DVR them via Dishnetwork satellite TV. I'd forgotten how much fun this little gem really was. We just watched an episode involving a big-city burger chain planning to move into town, threatening Newhart's inn and his neighbor, Kurt's, small cafe. (And of course there was the hilarious subplot involving maid Stephanie's embarrassment over a sudden case of acne that caused a single pimple to break out on her nose.)

Ah, well, I won't get into the plot. But I highly recommend "Newhart" if you can get it where you live. The dialog is always witty, the plots always silly, and the characters priceless. So when the crises of economy, employment, banks, home loans, and all the rest get to be too much, look for this little gem in reruns and cheer up.
