New cancer cases in U.S. show some significant declines
By Gary | November 26, 2008
I saw some news features on television yesterday and today that show cancer cases in the U.S. seem to be on the decline. That's certainly always good news.
I have a personal interest in cancers and various cancer issues. My mother died of cancer a few days before my eighth birthday. I don't recall what form of cancer, so I have no real idea of what these current reports mean in relation to the cancer which killed her.
I seem to recall the recent reports credit a large amount of the decline in new cancer cases to various public laws in most states restricting and/or forbidding public smoking. Hooray for that! I believe lung cancer and other smoking related cancers showed specifically more decline than some other cancers. (One of the rarer but terrible forms of lung cancer, mesothelioma, is generally related to asbestos particles, not smoking, so I don't know how it rated as far as declines in cases.)
I'll try very hard not to turn this little "good news" report into a rant or mini-sermon against smoking and public smoking in particular. I may not succeed, because I find smoking in public places to be outrageous behavior on the part of smokers. If smokers wish to foul their air, clothes, and food with cigarettes, they certainly have no right to foul MY air, clothes, and food with the stuff.
See? I told you I probably couldn't avoid the mini-sermon.
At any rate, enjoy the good news. Maybe someday we truly will win that "war" against cancer!
