New feature — check eBay collectibles, antiques on left sidebar
By Gary | December 10, 2008
I've gotten a really nice script for this site that searches on eBay, the world's largest auction site either online or off line, and displays real-time auctions you can actually click to and bid on. In this case, it is set to show you 10 real-time auctions on antiques and collectibles.
If you wish to check it out, go ahead and click on something that interests you. Live a little and find something nice for yourself, a friend, or a family member! Besides, there is no cost simply to click to eBay and look around.
I hope it's something you'll find interesting. It's always fun to me when I go to eBay and look around. I actually rarely buy something there, though I do buy something from time to time. Enjoy!
And, if you come back frequently, you'll find the auctions showing will be different. They change as items available on eBay are bought and sold, and as auctions expire. It really does display "REAL-TIME" auctions!

Had to remove ‘Red Kettle’ — but don’t forget to give if you can
By Gary | December 10, 2008
You'll notice that the nice little "Red Kettle" graphic allowing you to donate to the Salvation Army is now missing from the website -- only a couple of days after I put it in place.
Sadly, it was conflicting with some software I have to run, and I simply couldn't resolve that issue.
But don't forget to drop some change or even some "folding money" in the Red Kettles for the Salvation Army in your community. Times are hard out there, and if you can help, I applaud your efforts for trying to help needy folks whenever you can!

Are you remembering your pets for the holidays?
By Gary | December 8, 2008
Is there a pet lover out there who WON'T get something special for their pet(s) as part of their holiday celebration? Whether it's pet supplies, special pet treats, pet "clothing," or pet toys, I'll be every cat or dog owner or hamster or ferret owner will pick up something special for their pet.
That's because pets, at least in our culture, are a special part of family life for many people. I recall getting special toys and treats for numerous guinea pigs and hamsters over the years. (We may even have had our short-lived hermit crab pets near Christmastime one year when the kids were little. I don't recall.) We've had a couple of cats that were always well treated, especially with cans of cheap tuna or pinches of catnip at holiday time.
Enjoy your pets. But, of course, use the holidays as an important opportunity to give gifts and share needed love with PEOPLE, too!

Here’s a book by Cafferty to heat up your cold winter days
By Gary | December 4, 2008
Chilly morning in the Ozarks made it hard to climb out from under the old electric blanket today, for sure. (Okay, we don't actually have an electric blanket, but I know many of my neighbors and friends around here must. We just pile on the layers of good old-fashioned quilts and blankets.) But once we were up and moving, my mind was drawn to politics. Namely, I'm reading a book right now I highly recommend to all who want a glimpse at one ornery guy's view of contemporary America. I am really loving this book.
The book is "It's Getting Ugly Out There," by Jack Cafferty. It's sort of a cross between memoir and running political commentary. Jack is a sort of jack-of-all-trades news and political commentary guy on CNN. He was a fixture on their "American Morning Show" for awhile and now mostly stirs things up from Wolf Blitzer's "Situation Room" weekday afternoons.
Be warned in advance: Cafferty pulls no punches. You may love him or hate him -- but you'll always clearly understand where he stands. (The book also contains a fair amount of "conversational profanity" as I like to call it, so be warned about that, too.)
If you care about America, truly care about America, and you want someone who lays out exactly what he thinks our problems are and how we can deal with them, this is an excellent book to warm your winter days (daze) and perk up the old brain cells. It was published in 2007, so contains virtually nothing about the 2008 presidential hoopla or the current economic crisis.
But I highly recommend it. Get a copy as soon as you can and give it a read!

First snow over weekend turned my thoughts to winter world
By Gary | December 2, 2008
I think, except for those nasty times of ice storms and/or blizzards, that winter is my second favorite season. Autumn would be my first, as it ideally combines the beauty of the leaves with crisp, cool temperature to wipe away the memories of summer's humidity here in the Missouri Ozarks.
Winter, except for the serious ice we often get here, would come in second. Something about the cleanness of the landscape and even some of the winter cold really appeals to me.
I'm not a hunter or much of a winter outdoorsman -- though I respect those who hunt ethically and wisely, and I would like to get outdoors more each winter and just don't make myself get out there in the "hills and hollers" around here.
The weekend dusting of snow, and some sporting goods sites I was just looking at (found a nice place if you're in the gift shopping mood for Nikon rifle scopes), made me look forward to winter. Perhaps I'm getting "senile" as I get older -- because I am NOT normally used to feeling eager for winter to come on. Still, I suspect "eager" is overkill for my feelings. But for the first time in years, I am not totally "down" about the prospects of winter.
Ho ho ho. (And check back with me in a few months about how it went with the Ozarks ice storms!)
