Shouldn’t our presidential candidates be ‘elite’?
By Gary | May 7, 2008
Remember a few weeks ago when Sen. Clinton and Sen. McCain were battling to stick the label "elitist" on Sen. Obama? The term "elitist" the idea of being "elite" was treated as though it was on a par with "black plague," wasn't it?
Oddly enough, my family, my friends, and just about everyone I talked to suggested they WANT a president who's 1) smarter than average, 2) experienced in a variety of social situations, 3) politically savvy more than the average, 4) a superior leader in every way among the leaders of the world, etc. In other words, Americans want a president who has all the marks of an "elitist" -- someone who is well above average, exceptional in every way.
What do you want in a president? Perhaps "elitist" is just a label used to smear someone who may well be above average and more qualified to be president than you or I.
