Sort of a baseball ‘parable’ about umpires and attitudes

By Gary | June 8, 2008

Three baseball umpires were talking about their style of work.

"There's strikes and there's balls," the first umpire said. "When I see strikes I always call 'em strikes!" His buddies nodded in agreement.

"There strikes and there's balls," the second umpire added. "When I see 'em, I call 'em as strikes and I call 'em as balls." His buddies nodded in agreement to that one. Then the first two turned expectantly to hear what the third umpire had to say. He paused a moment, deep in thought. A smile lit up empire number three's face and he said:

"There strikes and there's balls. But they aren't NOTHING until I call 'em strikes or balls!"

Moral to this parable: Life may throw anything at you. But it only becomes a "strike" or a "ball" and has the ability to effect your attitude and outlook on life when YOU choose how you're going to call 'em!

(Disclaimer: I'm talking about how life impacts your attitudes that determine actions you'll take -- not actual, physical harm such as tornadoes, lightning strikes, car wrecks, etc. Though even in the midst of such disasters you ultimately choose what your attitude and actions will be reacting to those disasters.)
