Ways to brighten up your ‘bleak midwinter’ today
There’s an old Anglican hymn related to Christmas that captures what’s often the mood of nature this time of year. The words I’m thinking of go something like this: “In the bleak midwinter, frosty wind made moan, Earth stood hard as iron, water like a stone; Snow had fallen, snow on snow, snow on snow, In the bleak midwinter, long ago.”
I hope things aren’t quite as “bleak” for you today as the grim, cold face of nature pictured there. But, we must admit, this season of the year is hard for many: Holiday fun and giving is on hiatus (with probably some bills to pay for those presents), parties are done and gone, and the weather may even be icy or at least dull.
This would be the perfect time to invent a new holiday to fill the gap. Or perhaps try a new job or develop new skills. Maybe invent some wonder-drug fat burner to magically melt away those added post-holiday pounds?
Whatever you do today, make a special effort to help someone else. Maybe that’s just the cheer it’ll take to brighten any bleakness pressing down on your midwinter days.
