Winter weight gain may be natural process — but probably not

Science teaches us that most mammals put on extra weight in the form of body fat as winter weather approaches and, perhaps, that may account for the tendency we all have toward weight gain in the winter.

My bet is that it has nothing to do with natural biological process and more to do with holiday food treats and holiday feasting. (In my case, that candy bar I had on the way home from the grocery store this morning was a likely contributor, too.)

Are you ready for the traditional onslaught of winter/holiday season calories this year? Have you fortified yourself with healthy nutritional choices? Checked out all those weight loss plans and diet pills? Read up on the latest alli reviews, perhaps even scouted out some prescription weight loss aids?

Or perhaps holiday weight gain isn’t an issue for you? It is on my mind right now because of that aforementioned grocery store trip. That particular store has their annual pre-Thanksgiving Day turkey sale going on right now. Which led to a phone call from me at the grocer’s to my wife who’s working right now:

“Hi, Hon,” I said. “Did you know *illons has their turkey sale going on this week. They’re only 39 cents a pound through Saturday.”

“I thought we decided Jennifer [our daughter] was going to do the turkey this year,” wife replied.

“Well, yeah, we talked about it. Did you talk to her about it or send her email or anything?”

“No, not yet.”

“So, why don’t we buy the turkey and then stick her with cooking it?” I suggested.

“I suppose if you want to.”

There you have it, a little glimpse of daily life in our family.

Yes, I bought the turkey. No I haven’t yet been able to get Jenn on her cell phone so she doesn’t know about her little holiday cooking surprise yet.

Oh, uh, no, I never mentioned the candy bar to anyone either.

Recently I read an interesting reason for seasonal weight gain and why so many people are so fat.
In the spring and summer animals including people eat a diet heavy in fresh leafy greens. All of these things are high in omega 3 fatty acids created during photo synthesis. In the fall and winter diets shift to more naturally preserved things like beans, nuts and seeds that are loaded with omega 6′s.
Omega 3′s are “spring fats” and the body burns them quickly.
Omega 6′s are winter fats that are designed to be stored.

This caries over to the rest of the food chain. For example feedlots vs free range cows. Free range cows are eating natural grasses and are leaner. Feedlot cows are fed a diet to fatten them up. This is part of the reason why Brazilians are able to eat as much red meat as Americans with out gaining as much weight. Animals that eat a lot of omega 3′s have a lot of omega 3′s for the next step up on the food chain.

Sorry this was a bit rambling but the science geek in me had to share it.
