Recently I read an interesting reason for seasonal weight gain and why so many people are so fat.
In the spring and summer animals including people eat a diet heavy in fresh leafy greens. All of these things are high in omega 3 fatty acids created during photo synthesis. In the fall and winter diets shift to more naturally preserved things like beans, nuts and seeds that are loaded with omega 6's.
Omega 3's are "spring fats" and the body burns them quickly.
Omega 6's are winter fats that are designed to be stored.

This caries over to the rest of the food chain. For example feedlots vs free range cows. Free range cows are eating natural grasses and are leaner. Feedlot cows are fed a diet to fatten them up. This is part of the reason why Brazilians are able to eat as much red meat as Americans with out gaining as much weight. Animals that eat a lot of omega 3's have a lot of omega 3's for the next step up on the food chain.

Sorry this was a bit rambling but the science geek in me had to share it.
