Yikes! Plumbing repairs never brighten holiday season

I was just recalling last winter, and thinking that things around my house are a bit better this year than last.

My wife and I are very thankful as Christmas approaches for our old home — emphasis here is on OLD; built around 1907-11, I think. From time to time, we’ve had to make repairs or pay to have ‘em done. (I’m a most UN-handy handyman.) And not so many holiday seasons ago, we had to have work done on an upstairs bathroom. We needed to replace a sink.

I recall a friend helping me work on the old sink up there. Believe me, that sink was created and installed “on the cheap” when we had the house worked on just before moving it. It was no American Standard sink or something comparable. As I recall, we bought it from Acme Plumbing, speaking with a representative I believe was named Wylie E. Coyote.

(I apologize for such a terrible pun. If you aren’t paying attention, that was a lame reference to those marvelous Warner Bros. “Road Runner” cartoons of my childhood.)

My buddy and I referred to ourselves as the “Laurel and Hardy” of home repairs. I know little or nothing about what I’m doing, especially with plumbing, and he knows just enough to get me through it.

But it made for some fun holiday memories. A simple sink installation that wouldn’t take plumbers more than 20-30 minutes took us something like 3-4 hours. (I had no idea how those things are mounted to the wall. Who knew??) Still, I’m perfectly happy just to share those memories with my buddy by phone now and not need to call him in for any plumbing repair work this holiday season!
